I often have students write journals about their reading…. through their reflections I learned the importance of the idea of Voice/Choice/Opportunity…. factors I had read over and over in my grad class research. The students words and ideas made it real and necessary to implement in my classroom.
In their words:
“Last year I had to read the book the teacher picked. Knowing I have my own time to read my book makes me willing to read the ones you pick.”
“I’m trying to be more open minded of different books.”
“I like picking out my own books. When somebody picks one out for me, I don’t seem to read it. I think independent reading has inspired me to read more.”
*VOICE*
Access to books on topics that interest them
*CHOICE*
Self-select genre and type of book according to mood and desire
*OPPORTUNITY*
Regular independent reading time
